Bureau of Research on Industry and Economic Fundamentals (BRIEF) conducted a survey on behalf of IDF for their study, ‘Community Awareness Building on Girl Child and Conscientiousness Building on the Pre-conception, Pre-natal, Diagnostic Testing (PCPNDT) Act’.
The overall objective of the project under evaluation was to create mass awareness about the consequences of female foeticide and thereby prevent the practice and more generally to promote gender justice/equity.
BRIEF conducted the survey in the eight districts of Bihar. An End line survey of 1440 Household was done initially in these villages based on which sampling exercises were done for the final Baseline survey. Pre-survey activities included Training, Questionnaire development and sample frame development. Activities in the study included Sensitization of media at block level, health service providers at GP level, members of the Panchayati raj institutions, religious leaders etc.; organizing rallies in schools; stakeholder meetings with School teachers, Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), Anganwadi workers, Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) and other village elites/opinion leaders (on topics dealing with survival of girl child, PCPNDT act awareness, birth, death and marriage registration); organising and training of Bahen Raksha Dal (BRD)— which comprises of a minimum of 10 members and includes ANM, Anganwadi workers, ASHA, and Self-help group leaders formed at the village level.
The study was conducted in 8 districts of Bihar– Vaishali, Patna, Saran, Muzzfarpur, Madhubani, Nalanda, Lakhisarai, Munger. The study targeted female member the household, Gram Panchayat officers, local NGOs, local administration, district officers and block level officers.
