Empowering Women: Unveiling the Importance of Public Transport
This policy paper by BRIEF explores the pivotal role of public transport in fostering women’s empowerment and gender equality. Based on a seminar held in 2024, it examines the challenges women face in accessing safe, affordable, and inclusive transport, such as widespread harassment, safety concerns, inadequate amenities, and the lack of gender-responsive planning. The paper presents actionable recommendations, including zero-tolerance policies for harassment, gender-sensitive transport policies, improved infrastructure, and increased representation of women in transport planning and workforce roles. Drawing on successful case studies from Delhi, Chennai, and initiatives like Sakha, it highlights practical solutions such as women-only coaches, driver sensitization programs, and gender-inclusive urban policies. The report emphasizes that inclusive transportation is not only essential for women’s safety and mobility but also a driver of broader economic participation and social progress. It calls for collaborative efforts among policymakers, transport authorities, and civil society to transform public transport into a tool for empowerment and equality.
